Several years ago, life’s situations with it’s people and personalities prompted me to look beyond my present day-to-day and ask myself what directions and interests did the future hold for me? I began to realize it was time to fulfill personal wants and goals such as long distance biking, swimming, reading, learning music, and more. This realization led me to an accredited college, where my love of photography encouraged me to begin a journey; one of discovery, new beginnings, and ultimately, to my past.
My father was a plumber in rural America, his work landing him on farmsteads where he repaired wells for farmers. As people began migrating towards the cities, many of these farms where abandoned, with families leaving behind belongings that they didn’t want or need. I remember going into these places as a child and feeling amazement. I saw objects from ordinary life that I couldn’t imagine leaving behind; toys, clothing, photographs. Some things where in working condition while others needed a little tender loving care. Even now, as I once did as a child; I ask why?
As a teen, I inevitably grew out of the “wanting to be with Dad” stage, and found myself always riding my motorcycles towards the dirt roads where many of these old farms still stood. Once again, I felt drawn into the mysterious history of these places. On my treks I would even see ditches where farmers would discard things, and my curious mind added more questions to a growing list. Time after time, my mind echoed why?
Now, as an adult, I have discovered a way back to that time. Being a native of Iowa, with my family still living in and around the town of Villisca, affords me the opportunity to take photographs around where I grew up. These surroundings of the past have become my favorite subjects and the possibilities are limitless. My perspective is to capture the nature and emotion of my subjects, and I attempt to see and reproduce the small details and nuances that others might miss. I search for the memories of people whose presence I feel still linger, and hope that this is reflected in the shots I choose to capture. What the heart, the soul, and eye can envision, I endeavor to solidify on film.
